More recently, Samsung Display (Samsung Display; SDC) In order to cultivate the competitiveness of AR device market, it is looking to Micro LED technology LEDoS (LED on Silicon; LEDoS), and attracting attention from the outside world, although SDC recognizes OLED as the current trend, it is optimistic about the prospects of Micro LED technology and exposed the 6,600PPI-level LEDoS development plan.
Sony is a leading enterprise in OLEDoS technology, and its leading technical route is to use white OLED as the light source, using RGB color filters, and the technical barriers are relatively low. Sony will supply OLEDoS to Apple's first MR device, which goes on sale next year. However, Sony, which has its own brands of PlayStation (PS) and VR, will be a potential competitor to Apple in the future, and its OLEDoS production is not high. So in the future, LG Display will be Apple's next core supplier.
LG Display has been working on OLEDoS technology to enter Apple's supply chain. In Apple's first MR device, the internal OLEDoS is provided by Sony, and LG Display only provides external ordinary OLEDs. In order to achieve more disruptive immersion through higher pixel density, Apple asked LG Display and Samsung Display to develop OLEDoS at the level of 3500 PPI, which is about 700 PPI higher than the previous 2800 PPI. In addition, LG Display has recently begun to develop LEDoS technology.
Samsung Display is also promoting OLEDoS and LEDoS technologies at the same time, with the development direction of the former being applied to VR devices and the latter being used on AR devices. AR equipment is mostly used outdoors, the advantages of LEDoS are high brightness, high definition, long life, etc., unlike organic OLED, inorganic LED is relatively stable, high barrier to moisture and oxygen.
In terms of OLEDoS, Samsung Display aims to supply Samsung Electronics in 2024 with a pixel density of 3,000 PPI, after accumulating OLEDoS supply experience. Next, it will target external companies such as Apple. Therefore, its short-term technical route is the same as Apple's supplier Sony and LGD, for "WOLED+CF", and in the long term it will develop "RGB" OLEDoS.
In terms of LEDoS, Samsung Display is targeting 6600 PPI, which is relatively more aggressive than LG Display, and the technology currently being developed is based on blue LEDs and a quantum dot (QD) color conversion layer.
Before Apple, there were already a lot of companies that launched AR/VR devices. Meta released the 1200 PPI Quest Pro on October 12 this year, and PICO, a ByteDance company, launched the PICO 4 and Pro versions of the 1200 PPI on September 27. Sony will launch the 850 PPI PlayStation (PS) VR2 early next year. However, only Apple products planned for next year use OLEDoS.
